Some Important Facts About Jagannath Temple,Puri,Odisha


The Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha, is one of the most significant Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Jagannath, a form of Lord Vishnu. It is one of the Char Dham pilgrimage sites, which also include Badrinath, Dwarka, and Rameswaram.The current structure of the Jagannath Temple was built in the 12th century by King Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva of the Eastern Ganga dynasty. However, the site itself is believed to have been a place of worship for Lord Jagannath for many centuries before the construction of the present temple.

The temple's construction was initiated around 1136 AD and completed in the 12th century. The architecture of the temple is a classic example of Kalinga architecture, with its towering spire (shikhara) and intricate carvings.

According to legend, the original image of Jagannath was found near a fig tree in the form of a blue, sapphire-like stone. Lord Vishnu appeared in the dream of a king named Indradyumna and instructed him to build a temple and install the deity there.

The temple is also associated with the legendary sage Narada, who is said to have played a role in the construction of the temple.The temple is unique in its rituals, where the deities of Jagannath, Balabhadra (his brother), and Subhadra (his sister) are worshiped in the form of wooden idols. These idols are replaced every 12 to 19 years in a ceremony called Nabakalebara.

The famous Rath Yatra (Chariot Festival) is an annual event where the deities are placed in huge, elaborately decorated chariots and pulled through the streets of Puri by thousands of devotees.

Over centuries, the temple has been a center of devotion, culture, and politics in the region. It has seen patronage from various rulers, including the Gajapati kings of Odisha, the Marathas, and even the British during colonial times.

The temple has also been a focal point in the Bhakti movement, particularly through the teachings of saints like Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, who spent significant time in Puri.

The temple complex covers an area of 400,000 square feet and is surrounded by a high fortified wall. The main temple, called the Vimana, is 65 meters (213 feet) tall, making it one of the tallest temples in India.
The temple's kitchen, known as the Rosasala, is one of the largest in the world, preparing food for thousands of devotees daily. The Mahaprasad, or sacred food, is considered highly auspicious.

Today, the Jagannath Temple continues to be a vibrant center of worship, attracting millions of pilgrims and tourists each year. The temple is managed by the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA), which oversees the rituals, maintenance, and affairs of the temple.

The Jagannath Temple is an architectural marvel, representing the Kalinga style of architecture. The temple’s main tower, known as the Shikhara, is about 65 meters tall and is visible from far away, acting as a spiritual beacon for devotees.

The temple complex is vast, with various smaller shrines, halls, and courtyards that contribute to its grandeur. The intricate carvings and sculptures on the temple walls depict various stories from Hindu mythology.The temple has been a center of culture and spirituality for centuries. It has influenced the development of the Odissi dance form, one of the classical dance forms of India.

Mahaprasad

The temple's kitchen is one of the largest in the world and is famous for its Mahaprasad, a sacred offering that is cooked in traditional earthen pots using firewood. The food, which includes rice, dal, vegetables, and sweets, is considered highly auspicious and is distributed to devotees as a blessing from Lord Jagannath.

The temple was built in the 12th century by King Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva of the Eastern Ganga dynasty. Therefore, Lord jagannath's Mahaprasad, with its six tastes and specific Satvika components, serves as a wholesome and spiritually uplifying diet. This Mahaprasad not only nourishes the five layers of our being but also brings contentmentm clarity, wisdom, and supports long life.

If we consider thae Mahaprasad from an Ayurvedic perspective,it primarily consists of six tastes:sewwt , sour , bitter ,pungent & astringent.It is characterized by its dominance of the sweet tatse, which is grounding and nourshing.Ingredients like onions and garlic are not used.Making it suitable for balancing all three doshas.

This specially balanced diet provides nourishment to various tissues such as blood, muscle, bone, marrow, fat, reproductive tissue, and vitality.The inclusion of ghee(clarified butter) in Mahaprasad helps in increasing digestive fire, enhancing intellect, and promoting clarity and glow in the body.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, Ojas is considered as the innermost vital essence responsible for maintaining overall health and vitality of all bodily tissues.The Mahaprasad contains a balanced ratio of white rice, lentils, and vegetables which provides necessary nutrients and promotes emotionak and mental well-being

The Mahaprasad is also a source of good bacteria due to the use of curd at "Pakhala bhoga" and "Tanka Torani"(The Rice water),which helps in maintaining a healthy microbial flora in our digestive system.This Ayurvedic approach views the Mahaprasad as a highly nourishing food choice.
